STORY SUMMARY: An 1850’s Virginia Slave who ships himself in a box with the help of African American and white abolitionists. A fusion of music traditions from Gospel, R&B, and blue grass wrapped in original Negro Spirituals show us how the triumph of the human spirit prevails through the sacrifice of black and white abolitionists.

Your institution, college, civic group or school can apply and win to be one of six institutions to be awarded the “HENRY BOX BROWN” COMMUNITY REVITALIZATION GRANT. Co-sponsored by New York University’s Office of Governance and Community Affairs in partnership with the award winning Children’s Theatre Company of New York (ranked as top 12 children’s theater companies across the U.S.), this major grant will allow you to offer complimentary tickets to your participants, students, faculty, parents and support organization, to attend a performances of the award winning Henry Box Brown: A Musical Journey – an internationally acclaimed musical, and two-time nominee for Best Musical performed to sold-out audiences in the UK at the Edinburgh International Theatre Festival.SCHOOLS: The HBB grant will also provide your school teachers with an in-classroom, video-interactive workshop led by the celebrated speaker, professor and best-selling author of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome, Dr. Joy DeGruy, who’s work will deepen the knowledge of students on key points of the Henry Box Brown production.
MISSION / VISION:
Utilizing live theater as a tool for moral reasoning, the purpose of the Henry Box Brown Community Revitalization Grant is to help advance:· A transformative approach to building a racial equity lens in the classroom
· Examine and explore how inclusion impacts learning· to help build out a community engagement model as a means to build capacity· to allow a more targeted and intentional approach to ensuring student empowerment; advancing intercultural skills and literacy of all students.
· Build upon each performance with a student-driven pledge drive for social action
OBJECTIVES:
The Children’s Theatre Company will collaborate with in-classroom faculty to help advise and embed the design and delivery of key, capacity-building strategies identified by the school’s existing diversity, inclusion and equity plan.
STORY SUMMARY:
Henry Box Brown – A Musical Journey is based on the unmissable true tale of an 1850s Virginia slave who mails himself to freedom in a box. Directed by Tony Award winner, Ben Harney (Bway Dreamgirls) the show features an amazing fusion of Gospel, R&B, blue grass, traditional and original negro spirituals, performed by a 16-person strong Broadway cast and critically acclaimed gospel singers from New York City.
